13:38 outbreak of plague in La Libertad is controlled, Ministry of Health reports


Lima, ago. 14 (ANDINA). The Ministry of Health (MoH) reported that the outbreak of plague in the department of La Libertad is under control, due to the technical assistance that continues to provide the sector, as well as prevention and control measures against this evil that implements and reinforces Libertad regional government.
A report by the General Directorate of Health Promotion Minsa, specialist in charge of Hamilton García Díaz, underlines the commitment of the Chamber of Commerce of La Libertad with the National Health Strategy (NSS Zoonoses) to strengthen prevention work takes place in ports and slaughterhouses, to control rodents in their establishments.

Business Guild President, Victor Peralta, said that in total are available to support action that promotes the MoH and the Regional Health Management.

He said this week convened its members to act immediately in support of disease control.

Technical assistance has the support of specialists from the MoH and the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).

Meanwhile, the MoH will continue to monitor the actions of epidemiological surveillance, vector control, fumigation and trapping rodents and fleas for the presence of Yersinia pestis and strengthen surveillance and vector control, since there are still areas of African wildlife reservoirs .

This task is in charge of the Department of Epidemiology, National Institute of Health, Directorate General of Health (Digesa), Directorate General of Health of the People (DGSP) and the Directorate General of Health Promotion (DGPS).

On the treatment of people affected is free in all cases of bubonic plague, including hospitalization. In addition, 100 percent of the family and hospital contacts have been identified and have been given antibiotic prophylaxis treatment, according to the MoH.

The average incubation period of pneumonic plague is three days, for that reason intensified biosecurity measures in hospitals to prevent further infections.

He points out that mid-July a workshop was held macro-regional epidemiological database for monitoring, control and prevention of plague in northern Peru, in order to optimize pest control plans, and the areas involved Piura, Sullana, Lambayeque, La Libertad and Cajamarca and others.

Among the measures recommended to address the outbreak of plague include not eliminate rodents during the presentation of the outbreak of the plague, because release of fleas increases the risk of spread of the disease.

Make the proper storage of crops in rodent-proof granaries, adequate disposal of waste (sanitary burial), as well as food in rodent-proof containers.

Also improve the structure of the rodent-proof homes (Eliminate holes, cracks, routes of entry over the ceilings, etc.), among others.
