#South Korea - National Assembly Passes 'Revised Act on the Prevention of Livestock Epidemics'

JAN 13, 2011
The National Assembly passed the "Revised Act on the Prevention of Livestock Epidemics" on Thursday to contain the nationwide spread of foot-and-mouth disease.
The bill requires livestock farmers returning from foreign countries where animal epidemics have been reported to be questioned, tested and disinfected by local health authorities.
If a person does not comply with the quarantine measures, he or she could face up to one year in prison or a fine of five million won, which is roughly 4,400 US dollars.

Since late November, about 1.4 million cattle, pigs, goats and deer have been culled at an estimated loss of about 1.4 trillion won, or 1.2 billion dollars.
