Nov 03, 2011
On 26 October 2011, the WHO confirmed Indonesia’s 180th and 181sthuman cases of H5N1 avian influenza since June 2005. 149 of the 181 confirmed cases have died. The figures below show human cases over time and by province or regency of the country. Note that in June 2008, Indonesia’s Minister of Health announced that Indonesia would no longer promptly inform the WHO upon confirmation of a new human H5N1 case. The Minister informed AP that the ministry would instead announce new fatal cases on a six-monthly basis, in the hopes of focusing attention on “positive steps and achievements.” [1] While more regular reporting has since resumed, the number of confirmed cases has not reached the levels seen during the period 2005-2008; it is not known whether this is a reflection of a true decrease or an artefact of reporting policies.
