Bird flu in Changgedhaphu contained

Monday, January 16, 2012
The bird flu outbreak at Changgedhaphu in Thimphu has been contained. Authorities are however advising people not to consume poultry products from the area.
Over the last few days since the outbreak was reported, officials culled over 190 chickens in the backyard poultry farms in the area and disinfected all the vehicles coming from the area every day.
They also took people for tests and distributed medicines to 140 people who had consumed poultry products from the area.
Though the outbreak has been contained, authorities have not been able to confirm its cause.
They suspect that the flu had been brought here with imported poultry and poultry products from India.
“Despite the ban, there are a few people who always try to bring in these products. The outbreak has occurred mostly along the Phuntsholing-Thimphu highway which is used for importing the products,” said Dr. Tashi Dorji, the spokesperson on bird flu.
Officials are also appealing to poultry farm owners not to hide their poultry from officials who come to cull the birds and destroy the eggs.  http://www.bbs.com.bt/bbs/?p=8360
