Lifting the 21-Day Ban of Import/Sale of Live Poultry in China

Live chicken may be bound for local dinner plates again as early as tomorrow.

That is the hope after food and health chief York Chow Yat-ngok said he will consult with bird flu experts today before announcing whether to lift the 21-day ban on the import and sale of live chickens, imposed on December 21.

Chow said he expects demand for fresh chicken to increase once the ban is lifted, especially with Lunar New Year festivities around the corner.

He sees daily sales rising from 7,000 before the ban to about 10,000.

The ban, whose planned period expires tomorrow, was imposed after a dead chicken at the Cheung Sha Wan poultry market was found to be infected with the H5N1 virus.
