It's my understanding that blood tests for influenza A often turn up negative, and a biopsy of lung tissue (lower lung) is where it is more likely to show up. And then, the upper respiratory tract is the area of most interest and, if that was found to be positive in this case I would shudder to think of what was going on throughout the entire H5-affected region, as it would be indicative of a larger picture.

I know that test results can be skewed by a patient that has been on antibiotics.
