OTTAWA — Canadian researchers have pioneered a new treatment for Ebola, a deadly disease that kills up to 90 per cent of those infected within days.
The Winnipeg team’s treatment buys precious time for victims of the virus through an injection that is effective for up to 48 hours after exposure to the virus. Previous treatments only worked if administered within half an hour of infection.

The treatment works by slowing the virus, giving the body’s immune system more time to respond and kill off the Zaire strain of the virus, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

It’s been a lot of work,” said Gary Kobinger, 43, lead author of the study. “We’re not an overly big community working on this problem, but it’s one with a lot of people and a lot of resources and a lot of heart.”
Kobinger’s team has been tackling Ebola at the Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory for nearly a decade.
The treatment uses three different antibodies, which are the body’s natural markers for invading viruses. Researchers isolated and cloned the antibodies to bring them to a high enough concentration to be effective in destroying the disease with 100-per-cent effectiveness if administered within 24 hours and 50-per-cent effectiveness within 48 hours.
