As #coronavirus spreads globally, Nepal on alert

June 4, 2013
Excerpts:
Amids fears that the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) might invade Nepal, the government on Monday wrote to hospitals and laboratories asking them to be extra vigilant. The coronavirus is a respiratory illness that has claimed 33 lives and affected 23 people globally.

EDCD Director Dr GD Thakur said there is no plan to keep the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) under surveillance despite fears that returnee migrant workers might be the potential carrier of the disease. “For now, we will focus on hospital-based surveillance.”

Dr Geeta Shakya, director of NPHL, said they cannot conduct tests right away, despite the availability of the required equipment owing to the lack of reagents needed for tests.
