#MERS #Coronavirus Commentary on Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Confirmed Cases August 27, 2013

It is getting very busy in Saudi Arabia and Qatar recently with confirmed cases.  And other confirmed cases due to conact.

All was quiet in SA in early August, with the last report out on August 1st.  On August 20th, the reports started to increase.
We had two reports of confirmed out of Riyadh on the 20th:

Date of Report:  8/20/13

Name:  50yo

From:  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Adm:  ICU

Date of Report:  8/20/13

Name:  59yo

From:  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Adm:  ICU

On August 22nd,  we had a total of 6 cases reported on.  One was a 51(M) that I could not identify anywhere on my list.  The 51 year old had died, but was previously reported, as stated in the SA Ministry of Health website:

Date of Report:  8/22/13

Name:  51(M)

From:  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Note:  Previously reported.  Co-morbidities, cancer.

DOD:  8/22/13

Last night I reported that the mother of the above case has been hospitalized and is suspected of infection.  The mother had cared for the deceased victim:

Sources "above" that the mother of the deceased - namely elderly Spaanah - entered the King Khaled Hospital in Hafr Al-Batin, suspected of being infected with HIV, "Corona." The sources confirmed that the cause of death the virus, "Corona", but pointed out that his mother now subject to medical procedures after suspected of being infected with the virus.

Continuing with the cases reported on August 21 & 22, as there were a total of 6, we also have:

Date of Report:  8/21/13

Name:  50(F)

From:  Rayadh

Adm:  ICU

Note:  Has cancer & other co-morbidities.

Name:  70(M)

From:  Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Adm:  ICU

Note:  Co-morbidities.

Name:  54(M)

DOD:  8/21/13

Name:  31(M)

From:  Asir region, Saudi Arabia

Adm:  ICU

Note:  Co-morbidites

Name:  55(M)

From:  Asir region, Saudi Arabia

Adm:  ?

Note:  Contact of confirmed case.  Asymptomatic.

It's also worth pointing out that the 2nd case above from the Asir region, was asymptomatic.  This case may have had contact with the other case from Asir, 31(M), who is in the ICU.  This has happened before with this virus.

To recap, a total of 6 cases reported on since August 21.   1 is suspected, 5 are confirmed.

Onto Qatar.  Qatar has had a total of 4 cases confirmed, with 2 being reported in the last few days.
August 21st seems to be a popular date, as it was then we also had a case reported in Qatar.  This person had been to Saudi Arabia and returned, after doing Umrah:

Date of Report:  8/21/13

Name:  59

From:  Qatar, infected in Saudi Arabia for Umrah

Adm:  Hamad General Hospital, Stable Condition

Note:  Traveled to Saudi Arabia previously, most likely doing Umrah.  Detected upon admission to Qatar.

Yesterday, we received a report of another confirmed case in Qatar, a contact case to the above.  From the blog:

The patient is a 29-year-old Qatari citizen who has a exposure to a confirmed case and suffers from asthma and several risk factors.
We'll add this case to the list:
Date of Report:  8/26/13

Name:  29(M)

From:  Qatar

Adm:  National Flu Center Critical Condition

Note: Co-morbidities (asthma).  Contact case.  Possibly contact is 51yo (8/21).
Hopefully, this has helped clear up the facts on these cases.    We'll be keeping a close eye on the Middle East.
